Lawrence, MA (October 7, 2026) — The family of Louise Haffner Fournier joined Northern Essex Community College and local historians and community members to celebrate the rededication of the building bearing her name. The Louise Haffner Fournier Education Center, located on Amesbury Street in Lawrence, was integral to the creation of NECC’s Lawrence Campus. The college first began leasing the building in 1999. In 2006, the building was officially named for Haffner Fournier. In 2014, the family formally donated the building to the college. "image

“Over time, with generous contributions from the community, from the Haffner family, and from others, we’ve built a full campus here,” said NECC President Lane Glenn. “Years ago, we added labs in this building that suddenly allowed students to complete their degrees entirely on our Lawrence Campus. It’s important to be able to do that close to home. And just a couple of weeks ago, we welcomed 115 students from Greater Lawrence Technical High School into renovated space downstairs. This kind of access to educational opportunity is central to our mission, and I know it was Louise’s mission.”

Haffner Fournier was the only child of John and Emma Haffner, who founded Haffner’s Service Stations, Inc. in 1925 with the opening of a service station at 69 Parker Street in Lawrence. She earned a degree in chemical engineering from MIT and a master’s degree in business administration from Boston University. She was also the first woman in the state to earn a burner service technician license and a Class-1 tractor-trailer license. She took an active role in the family business, managing it throughout the years with her husband, Emile Fournier, and her father. Her son, E. Haffner Fournier, joined the business in 1955 when her father died. Haffner’s became a leading marketer of petroleum products in the Merrimack Valley with multiple service stations and a full- service heating oil business.

Recently, the college completed a renovation project in the Louise Haffner Fournier Education Center lobby. Vibrant displays and comfortable seating options greet students and visitors. Just off the lobby is the White Fund room, which hosts lectures, readings, and community meetings. The room features reproductions of art owned by The White Fund, with the originals housed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

“As we celebrate our good fortune today, there is plenty of evidence around us that, simply put, sharing the wealth is a good thing,” reflected White Fund President Jay Dowd at the rededication ceremony.
