{"id":35244,"date":"2026-10-20T11:50:15","date_gmt":"2026-10-20T15:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=35244"},"modified":"2026-10-20T11:50:15","modified_gmt":"2026-10-20T15:50:15","slug":"articulation-agreement-turns-community-health-workers-experience-into-college-credit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/10\/20\/articulation-agreement-turns-community-health-workers-experience-into-college-credit\/","title":{"rendered":"Articulation Agreement Turns Community Health Workers&#8217; Experience into College Credit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Haverhill, MA (October 15, 2026)\u2014 A new articulation agreement between the Massachusetts Association of Community Health Workers (MACHW) and Northern Essex Community College will help local community health workers (CHWs) get closer to earning their associate degrees. The agreement allows CHWs to receive college credit for time they&#8217;ve already spent working in the field. Students who have completed a Massachusetts Department of Public Health-approved CHW training program could be eligible for up to 15 credits immediately, with another nine possible upon further evaluation. That&#8217;s the equivalent of two semesters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;They already have thousands of community work hours as part of their CHW certification, so we recognize their expertise,&#8221; said NECC&#8217;s Public Health Program Coordinator Amanda Prophett. &#8220;I think that makes people feel valued already before they even come in the door.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Prophett expects the articulation agreement will encourage more CHWs to seek associate degrees in public health, which can lead to transfer opportunities, career advancement, better care for the individuals they serve, and higher wages.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that there&#8217;s a continued, growing demand for community health workers in Massachusetts, especially. I think having culturally competent or bilingual community health workers is a huge need right now in the Merrimack Valley. This agreement supports people who are currently working in our local workforce and supports the community because these are the folks that connect directly with people that are maybe struggling or need connections to resources. These CHWs know the community, and they know the language, and they know the culture,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There is no cost to members of MACHW to have their experience evaluated at NECC. Many may also qualify to attend NECC tuition- and fee- free under Massachusetts&#8217; free community college program.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Essex currently offers a certificate in <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/academics\/credit-programs\/health\/community-health-worker-certificate\/\">community health<\/a> and an associate degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/necc.edu\/academics\/credit-programs\/health\/public-health\/\">public health<\/a>.
