SUMMARY:Hot Topics in Higher Education with President Lane Glenn
DESCRIPTION:Should Colleges Develop Civic Responsibility in Students (and If So\, How)?\nEven in times that aren’t as politically polarized as the present\, it can be difficult to find common ground around what “civic responsibility” means and whether and how it is the duty of colleges to develop it in their students. \nFor this “Hot Topics in Higher Education\,” read some of the resources below and come ready to discuss these and other questions: \n\n\n\n\n\nDoes civic responsibility involve a deep understanding of our country’s history\, and if so\, is it the staunchly patriotic version of our history promoted by the Trump administration and the America First Policy Institute\, the provocatively critical version offered by the Pulitzer Center and the 1619 Project\, or something else?\nShould civic responsibility mean ensuring as many students as possible exercise their right to vote\, as required by the Higher Education Act and encouraged by organizations like the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge\, or should it mean limiting steps to register student voters and taking extra precautions against voting fraud as directed in the U.S. Department of Education’s recent Dear Colleague letter?\n\nIs it more civically responsible to open campuses to the full range of speakers and their ideas that may interest students\, or to limit the expression of those ideas to just those acceptable by the left or by the right?\nShould colleges elevate opportunities for students to become community organizers for their chosen causes through organizations like Campus Compact\, or help them focus on their chosen professions through more narrowly tailored work-based learning opportunities like internships\, apprenticeships and clinical experiences?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4/6\, 12-1pm\, L244 Lawrence Campus\nRegistration: https://northernessex.wufoo.com/forms/z1n4rlxv15ab1s0/ \n Print View

SUMMARY:Hot Topics with President Lane Glenn
DESCRIPTION:Hot Topics in Higher Education: The Trump Administration’s “Compact for Higher Ed”\nFor most of the 20th century\, the “social compact” between higher education and society in America could be summed up like this: Society invests in colleges and universities — through public funding\, tax exemptions\, and trust — in exchange for institutions advancing the public good. \nWhile experiences varied and this compact did not always work equally well for everyone\, it seemed to help higher education progress and grow\, while indeed offering tremendous value to the public\, in the form of a better prepared workforce\, scientific and technological breakthroughs\, contributions to art and culture\, and more. \nIn recent decades\, though\, that “compact” has been threatened from many directions\, as higher ed spending has outpaced the ability or the willingness of the public to keep up with its cost\, and political movements on both the left and the right have created fissures in the “trust” Americans have in colleges and universities.  Recent Gallup polls have reflected a significant decline in overall trust of colleges and universities\, and I have written myself about the need for “A New Social Compact for Community Colleges in the Commonwealth.” \nAs part of its effort to reshape American higher education\, the Trump administration recently proposed a “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education\,” which\, if accepted by institutional leaders\, offer them preference for government funding and a more favorable policy environment if they agree to: \n\nBan consideration of race or sex in hiring and admissions processes.\nFreeze tuition for a five-year period. (In addition\, those with an endowment worth more than $2 million per undergraduate can’t charge tuition for admitted students pursuing hard science programs\, with some exceptions.)\nLimit international undergraduate enrollment to 15 percent of the student body.\nCommit to institutional neutrality.\nDefine and interpret “male\,” “female\,” “woman” and “man” according to reproductive function and biological processes.\nRequire applicants to take standardized tests\, such as the SAT or ACT.\nClamp down on grade inflation.\nRestrict employees from expressing political views on behalf of the institution.\nShut down departments that “punish\, belittle” or “spark violence against conservative ideas.”\nAnonymously poll students and employees on compact compliance and publish the results.\n \n\nFor this “Hot Topics in Higher Education\,” read some of the resources about the proposed Compact\, compiled by Inside Higher Ed\, in the “A Controversial Compact for Higher Ed” special collection on their home page\, and come prepared to explore questions like: \n\nWhat do the Compact’s requirements say about shifting perceptions of higher education in America?\nShould colleges consider adopting some\, or all\, of the requirements?  Which ones? Why?\nDo the Compact’s provisions unreasonably impose restrictions on institutional and academic freedom?\nWhat should the role of the federal government be in regulating and funding higher education?\n\nREGISTER HERE. \n Print View

SUMMARY:Hot Topics with President Glenn
DESCRIPTION:Show Me the Money: What is the Responsibility of a Community College for Graduate Earnings?\n\nNECC’s latest Carnegie Classification lists us as a “Medium-sized\, Professions-focused\, Associate-granting” institution with “Higher Access/Lower Earnings” because our graduates\, on average\, earn less than their peers in the job market eight years after graduation. At the same time\, many states (including Massachusetts) are looking at college funding formulas that recognize how successful institutions are at placing graduates in high-skill\, high-wage career fields\, and national organizations like Achieving the Dream are shifting their focus toward “Community Vibrancy\,” which includes upward mobility indicators like annual earnings. \n  \nHow important should socioeconomic mobility goals be to NECC’s mission\, and if they are important\, how should they be reflected in the degrees and non-degree programs we offer\, in our partnerships\, in our hiring and promotion practices\, and in other ways? \n  \nPlease RSVP HERE. \n Print View
