Free Direct Care Training Program Offered at NECC

A free, 50-hour program to train personal and home care aides will be offered at Northern Essex Community College through its Workforce Development and Community Education program at the Riverwalk in Lawrence thanks to a federal grant.

Classes will be held Monday through Friday, February 25 through March 8 from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Students must attend all training days in order to successfully complete the program. This program is designed to teach students the skills that will support them in their role as a personal care attendant or homemaker.

In Massachusetts personal care aides earn a set rate of $12.68 an hour while working for an independent consumer employer. On average, homecare aides earn between $10 and $11 an hour working for a home care agency.

Fifteen students can be accommodated in this first session.

There is currently a great demand for direct care employees to provide personal care services such as bathing, dressing, foot care, denture care, and walking as a personal assistant to shopping, meal planning and preparation, laundry, and light housekeeping as a homemaker.

A critical shortage of direct care workers is expected due to a projected 51-70% growth in the elder and disabled population by 2020.

This program will provide the core skills and knowledge to work in this growing field and can also be the starting point for anyone interested in training for other types of healthcare jobs in the future.

For additional information or to register, contact Dianne Lahaye at dlahaye@necc.mass.edu or 978-659-1222 or Diane Zold-Gross at dzoldgross@necc.mass.edu or 978-659-1221.

This program is funded through the MA Personal and Home Care Aide State Training (PHCAST) Grant ProjectT82HP20323 funded by US HHS.

Affordable Education Leads to Successful Career in Education

Affordable Education Leads to Successful Career in Education

Shalimar Quiles

After graduating from Lawrence High School in 2006, Shalimar Quiles was ready to experience someplace new so she enrolled at an out-of-state university. One semester later, financial reality set in, and she decided to return home and attend Northern Essex.

“I had accumulated thousands of dollars in loans after just one semester in Connecticut,” she explains. “I realized that if I transferred to Northern Essex, I could pay my way with my part-time job.”

At Northern Essex, Shalimar discovered “a strong sense of community,” something that had been missing at the larger university she attended.

“I built partnerships with my peers, professors, and college staff,” she says. “From career counseling to academic support to internships, I took advantage of just about everything the college offered.”

After earning an associate degree in liberal arts with journalism/ communication option and high honors, Shalimar transferred to Simmons College in Boston to continue her studies in art, communications, and Spanish.

With her bachelor’s degree in hand, she landed a job in community/parent relations with Unlocking Potential, a nonprofit educational group.

In 2012, she was recruited back to Lawrence by Jeff Riley, Lawrence Public School System superintendent/receiver, who hired her as scholarship re-engagement manager, a position in which she’s tasked with keeping students engaged in school.

Although her job keeps her very busy, Shalimar fully intends to continue her education and would eventually like to earn her master’s in higher education.

“Urban education is the perfect field for me,” says Shalimar. “Northern Essex was a critical stepping stone, preparing me academically for my future and allowing me to have experiences that helped me to choose my professional path.”

Free ESOL Program Focuses on College and Careers

More than 15 non-native English speakers will have the opportunity to attend a free, 20-week program designed to teach them English as it is used in Northern Essex Community College’s health care certificate programs.

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Bridge to College and Health Careers Program will be offered at NECC Riverwalk, 360 Merrimack St., Lawrence beginning in the winter of 2013.

The program will run Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon from January 21 through July 15 with spring and summer breaks. The program is funded by the Massachusetts Literacy Foundation in partnership with Verizon.

Intermediate English speakers with a high school diploma or G.E.D. are encouraged to apply. After completing the program they may want to apply for admission to one of NECC’s health care certificate programs or continue with further academic or language support programs.

The 180-hour program will include pre-college level classes teaching English language skills through Introduction to Healthcare Occupations, Oral Communications, Medical Terminology, Computer Skills, and College Success. There will be an emphasis on academic reading and writing. Students who complete the two semesters will be better prepared to enroll and succeed in a college-level coursework.

The Bridge classes are built around the healthcare certificate programs offered at NECC,” says Kelly, the program coordinator. “We know non-native speakers learn English best in a contextualized environment. We selected one discipline – healthcare – because it is a rapidly growing field with lots of job opportunities.”
This course is available on a first come, first served basis for eligible participants.
