The Student as a Teacher: Business Major Shares Research on Organizational Analysis

After taking an online course on organizational analysis, Northern Essex Community College business transfer major Daniel Keating became fascinated with the topic.  That fascination led to additional research and a presentation which he will share on Wednesday, April 17 at noon in the Center for Business and Accounting, located in the Spurk Building, Room 201, Haverhill Campus.

Keating believes that the more you know about how organizations work, the more effective you will be.

“We are all involved in many organizations,” says Keating.   “Those organizations may include your family, your school, your workplace, or the nonprofits you choose to get involved with.”

Keating promises that after attending his presentation you will be better able to navigate the organizations in your life and help make those organizations stronger.

Keating, a Groveland resident, will graduate from Northern Essex in May and is continuing on for a bachelor’s in finance and psychology.  His ultimate goal is to obtain a master’s or doctorate degree in industrial organizational psychology.

He intends to pursue a career in private equity or venture capital, with a focus on improving employee life.

While at Northern Essex, he’s been very active on campus, serving as the student in residence at the Center for Business and Accounting and as a student representative on three of the New England Commission of Higher Education Inc (NECHE) self-study steering committees.   He also serves as the student representative on two of the seven All College Assembly (ACA) committees: Finance and Student Affairs.  The ACA is the college’s internal governance system.

Professor Sheila Muller is impressed with his focus and his dedication.  “Daniel believes the fastest way to impact society as a whole is through private industry, specifically small agile companies that are receiving funding and counseling to scale their practices before they become slow moving corporate behemoths.”

To learn more about the April 17 presentation, contact Judith Ciampi in the Business and Accounting Center, 978 556-3409 or jciampi@necc.mass.edu.

NECC MarCom Department Brings Home a Silver

Northern Essex Community External Partners Report took home a silver in the National Council of Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) Paragon Awards, the only national competition that honors excellence exclusively among marketing and PR professionals at two-year colleges.

The award was presented last month at NCMPR’s national conference in San Antonio, Texas.

The External Partners Report—titled “Together We Can Do Great Things”—was produced entirely in-house by the NECC Marketing and Communications team.

The report was distributed electronically last fall to 2300 of the college’s external partners including local employers; K-12 administrators; nonprofit leaders; transfer colleges; local, state, and federal elected officials; and volunteer boards.   The goal was to position the college as an important community resource, making key influencers aware of the breadth and depth of its community partnerships.

The report combined stats—such as the 400-plus high school students who are enrolled at Northern Essex—with stories illustrating the best of the college’s external partnerships.

This year’s Paragon competition drew 1,939 entries from 262 colleges across the United States and Canada. Durham College of Canada won the Gold in the Electronic Annual Report category and Community College of Philadelphia was awarded the bronze.

NECC Administrator Receives National Award

Health care faculty member Nancy Julin and NECC President Lane Glenn attended the Chair Academy Annual conference where Julin received the Idahlynn Karre Exemplary Leadership Award.

Nancy Julin, Northern Essex Community College’s assistant dean of health professions and director of iHealth programs, received the The Idahlynn Karre Exemplary Leadership Award during the  28th Annual Chair Academy International Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

Julin, of Leominster, who has worked at Northern Essex for 15 years, will retire in May.

“Nancy Julin was instrumental in the implementation of this unique, successful program,” wrote NECC President Lane Glenn, who nominated her for the award. “iHealth serves the needs of busy, working adults who need flexibility in pursuing a college credential to obtain a living wage or advancement in their careers in the health care field. This effort involved creating multiple new academic programs, all offered in hybrid (part online and part classroom) courses so students only had to come to campus one or two nights a week.”

In addition, Glenn noted that Julin also oversaw support services for these busy adults, often from underrepresented groups to assure they were successful. iHealth has served thousands of students and helped to fill critical needs in our regional health care system.

The prestigious award is given to an individual or a team that has developed a program to enhance the learning community, increased diverse offerings while meeting the needs of a changing college population, created an environment that empowers others or exhibited model loyalty, commitment, and integrity.

Glenn presented the award to Julin at the conference in late March.

On Saturday, May 18, Bob Rivers, chair and CEO of Eastern Bank, will be the featured speaker at Northern Essex Community College’s 57th annual commencement ceremony, which will be held beginning at 11 am on the Haverhill Campus. In addition to leading Eastern Bank, America’s oldest and largest mutual bank and the largest independent community bank headquartered in Massachusetts with $11 billion in assets, Bob is a leader of social justice and sustainability causes, and an advocate for a more inclusive community.

“I have long been an admirer of Bob, his story, and the incredible community building and economic development work—centered in principles of social justice—that he and Eastern Bank have been doing locally and regionally,” said Lane Glenn, president of Northern Essex.  “He’s been a strong supporter of community colleges and our mission, and he will be the perfect speaker for our grads.”

Rivers, a 37-year community banker who started his career as a teller and bank janitor in his hometown of Stoughton, believes that doing what’s right and smart means building a strong business that does good things to help people prosper. Under his leadership, Eastern has delivered record financial results while carrying out the principles of community service, philanthropy and advocacy. Eastern’s growth and financial success enable it to provide greater contribution to area nonprofits as well as increasing resources to better serve its customers and strengthen the local economy. As a community bank, Eastern’s success is directly linked to the strength of the communities it serves. It regularly invests in underrepresented and underserved communities and has locations in 12 of the 26 “Gateway Cities,” including Lawrence where in 2011 Eastern opened the first full-service banking office in the community in more than two decades.

During River’s tenure as CEO, Eastern has been a leading voice in the business community in support of equal opportunity for all, including on the successful Yes On 3 transgender rights ballot initiative in Massachusetts, the advancement of women, and the growth of minority-owned businesses. Since 1999, Eastern has donated an average of 10% of its net income to local charities and its outspoken advocacy and community support have exceeded more than $120 million in charitable giving. In Lawrence and Haverhill, Eastern has given more than $550,000 to nonprofits in those communities in the past five years alone and made a $100,000 grant in 2018 to “The Leading Into the Future Together (LIFT)” campaign for Northern Essex Community College. Bob is also a co-founder of the Lawrence Partnership, the private-public sector collaboration focused on accelerating economic development and improving the quality of life in Lawrence.

In addition to his work at Eastern, Rivers serves on the Boards of many nonprofits across the state, including as Chair of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable and The Dimock Center. His extensive involvement in the community also includes serving on the Board of Directors of The Lowell Plan, the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and Jobs for Mass. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Stonehill College, the Board of Corporators of Lowell General Hospital, the Advisory Boards of the Lawrence Partnership and JFK Library Foundation, and is a member of the Boston Women’s Workforce Council. Rivers has been named among the Top 10 “Most Influential People in Boston” by Boston Magazine, and to the Boston Business Journal Power 50 list for the last three years. He has been recognized by many organizations for his work in championing diversity and social justice, including The Boston Globe, The Partnership, Get Konnected!, Color Magazine, the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA), the Asian American Civic Association (AACA), Association of Latino Professionals For America (ALPFA), El Planeta, the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition, The Theater Offensive, and MassINC.

Author Julia Alvarez will be the next White Fund speaker Thursday, April 25, at the Lawrence Public Library.

It’s been 25 years since “In the Time of Butterflies,” by Julia Alvarez was published.
