Meet the Instructor: Lori Capra Brings Experience and Encouragement to Accounting Students

Submitted by on February 25, 2026 – 3:27 pm

For nearly three decades, Lori Capra has helped students discover that accounting is more than numbers on a page—it’s a practical skill set that can open doors, build confidence, and create opportunity. With a master’s degree in accounting, 25 years teaching at Haverhill High School, and nearly two decades at Northern Essex, Capra brings both deep subject-matter expertise and a student-centered approach to every class she teaches.

Capra focuses on helping students connect accounting theory to real-world application—whether they are exploring a new career path, strengthening skills for their current job, or taking their first step into higher education through a certificate program. NECC’s Center for Corporate and Community Education is now enrolling students for the March 2026 start of its Accounting and Bookkeeping Fundamentals Certificate program taught by Capra. Designed for aspiring accountants, entrepreneurs, and working professionals looking to strengthen their skills, the program is led by longtime educator Capra. In a recent discussion about her time at NECC, Capra shared insights into the certificate program she is teaching this Spring.

Q: Who do you think this program is especially great for?

A: I think this program is great for those who may not have taken any accounting coursework in the past but are working in a role that calls for accounting/bookkeeping skills. It could also be for entrepreneurs who want an overview of the accounting cycle and an introduction to QuickBooks.

Q: If someone is on the fence about enrolling, what would you say to them?

A: I would say that it’s a stress-free, remote-learning experience. Employers like to see that their employees are dedicated to learning more about the theory and applications of accounting. Taking the initiative can lead to job growth.

Q: How is this program structured to benefit and work for non-traditional students?

A: The program is structured to make it convenient to enroll, participate, and succeed in the program. The Zoom remote setting lends itself to collaboration and support.

Q: How would you describe the accounting certificate program to someone who’s never heard of it?

A: The accounting certificate program is a non-credited condensed program that offers participants a thorough overview of accounting theory and an opportunity to learn step-by-step QuickBooks applications. When you complete the program, students can pursue a QuickBooks certificate or continue their studies at NECC in a degreed Accounting program.

Q: Can you talk about a specific memory or experience where you felt you made an important impact in your students’ lives?

A: On more than one occasion, students have shared an instance where they have applied what they have learned throughout the sessions within their role at work. For example, one student learned that when reconciling a bank statement, QuickBooks can download transactions directly from the bank. Transferring newly learned concepts to job specific tasks can be rewarding and fun.

Q: What leads you to encourage students to pursue this?

A: The accounting industry is vast. Not only do different levels of accountancy exist (from bookkeeping to controller) but also many settings and industries. The setting can range from domestic to international, from a small suburban office to a large office in the city. You can work in Public or Private accounting, and you can specialize in industries from sports and entertainment to pharmaceuticals and technology. You can start with a certificate and work your way all the way to a master’s degree.

With flexible remote learning, practical applications, and clear pathways to continued education, NECC’s Accounting and Bookkeeping Fundamentals Certificate offers a strong starting point for career advancement.
