Maintain Your F-1 Status

Maintaining your F-1 status is your responsibility. To remain in good standing, you must comply with regulations established by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and meet all NECC academic requirements.

To maintain your F-1 status, you must:

• Enroll full-time (at least 12 credits) during the fall and spring semesters.
• Contact the International Student Office before dropping, withdrawing from, or reducing your course load.
• Count no more than one online course each semester toward your full-time enrollment requirement.
• Maintain satisfactory academic progress and good academic standing.
• Attend classes regularly and complete required coursework and assignments.
• Communicate with your instructors if you encounter academic difficulties.
• Take advantage of available academic support services, including tutoring and academic coaching.

Your Semester Responsibilities

Each semester, be sure to:

• Register for and maintain full-time enrollment.
• Check your NECC email regularly for important updates and notifications.
• Keep your address, phone number, and contact information current.
• Meet with your academic advisor to stay on track for graduation.
• Consult the International Student Office before making any changes to your academic program, enrollment status, employment, or immigration status.

Employment Information for F-1 Students

Employment opportunities for F-1 students in the United States are limited and regulated by federal immigration laws. Before accepting or beginning any type of employment, you must ensure that you have the appropriate authorization. The International Student Office is available to help you understand your employment options, determine your eligibility, and guide you through any required authorization processes.

Important: Always contact the International Student Office before accepting or starting any employment, whether it is on-campus or off-campus.

On-Campus Employment

F-1 students may be eligible to work on-campus while maintaining their status. To qualify, students must:

• Work no more than 20 hours per week while classes are in session.
• Limit employment to eligible on-campus positions.
• Receive approval from the International Student Office before beginning employment.
• Follow all college and immigration regulations related to student employment.

Students may be eligible to work full-time during official school breaks, depending on their status and employment eligibility.

Off-Campus Employment

Off-campus employment is generally not permitted for F-1 students unless specific authorization has been granted under U.S. immigration regulations. Eligible employment opportunities may include:

• Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
• Optional Practical Training (OPT)
• Severe Economic Hardship Employment

Each of these employment categories has specific eligibility requirements and application procedures.

Important: Students must receive the appropriate authorization from the International Student Office and, when required, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) before beginning any off-campus employment. Unauthorized employment is a violation of F-1 status and may have serious immigration consequences.

Before Changing Your Academic or Personal Information

To maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with F-1 immigration regulations, the International Student Office must update your SEVIS record whenever certain changes occur.

Before making any significant changes to your academic program, enrollment, employment, or personal information, contact the International Student Office for guidance. Early communication can help you avoid unintended impacts on your F-1 status and ensure that all required updates are completed properly.

Academic Changes

Contact the International Student Office before:

• Changing your major or academic program
• Changing your degree or education level
• Dropping or withdrawing from a course
• Reducing your course load
• Taking a leave of absence
• Requesting an extension of your program end date
• Applying for graduation

Personal Information and Immigration Updates

Contact the International Student Office if you plan to:

• Move or change your U.S. address
• Change your phone number or email address
• Travel outside the United States
• Transfer to another college or university
• Apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
• Apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Important: Some changes require advance approval or updates to your SEVIS record. If you are unsure whether a change may affect your F-1 status, contact the International Student Office before taking action. Travel Within the United States

As an F-1 student, you are generally free to travel within the United States without notifying the International Student Office. Whether you’re visiting friends, exploring a new city, or traveling during school breaks, it’s important to carry appropriate identification and immigration documents.

Before You Travel

We recommend carrying the following documents whenever you travel within the United States:

• Valid passport
• Current Form I-20
• Copy of your I-94
• Government-issued photo identification (such as your passport or state ID)
• Proof of enrollment (recommended), such as an enrollment verification letter or unofficial transcript

Important Reminders

• Keep your immigration documents in a safe place while traveling.
• If you plan to be away from campus for an extended period, continue checking your NECC email for important announcements.
• If your travel plans change and you will miss classes, notify your instructors in advance and make arrangements to complete any missed coursework.

Traveling within the United States does not require a travel signature on your Form I-20. Travel signatures are only needed when you leave and re-enter the United States.

If your domestic trip involves crossing an international border or traveling to another country, contact the International Student Office before making your travel arrangements.

International Travel

If you plan to travel outside the United States, contact the International Student Office before making travel arrangements. Meeting with an international student advisor can help ensure that your immigration documents are current and that you are prepared to return to the United States in valid F-1 status.

We recommend contacting the International Student Office at least two weeks before your departure date to review your travel plans and documentation.

Before You Travel

Make sure you have the following documents:

• A valid passport
• A valid F-1 visa (Canadian citizens are exempt from the visa requirement)
• A current Form I-20 with a valid travel signature
• Proof of enrollment, such as an enrollment verification letter or unofficial transcript (recommended)

Before traveling, check the travel signature on page 2 of your Form I-20. If your signature will be more than 12 months old on the date you re-enter the United States, contact the International Student Office to request a new travel signature before your departure.

Travel to Canada, Mexico, and U.S. Territories

Travel to Canada, Mexico, and U.S. territories may involve different entry and reentry requirements. Before finalizing your travel plans, consult with the International Student Office to confirm that your documents are valid and that you understand any special travel considerations.

Please keep the following in mind:

• Some F-1 students who travel to Canada, Mexico, or adjacent islands for fewer than 30 days may be eligible to re-enter the United States through Automatic Visa Revalidation, provided they meet all eligibility requirements.
• Travel to U.S. territories, such as Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands, generally does not require formal reentry into the United States. However, students should carry their valid passport, Form I-20, and other F-1 documentation while traveling.
• A valid F-1 visa allows you to apply for entry to the United States, but it does not guarantee entry into another country. Always review the entry requirements and visa requirements of your destination before traveling.

Important: Travel regulations and immigration requirements can change. Before making international travel plans, consult with the International Student Office to ensure you have the appropriate documentation and understand any potential impact on your F-1 status.

Planning for Graduation and Your Future

As you approach the completion of your program at NECC, it is important to begin planning for your next steps. Whether you intend to continue your education, gain practical work experience, or prepare to return home, the International Student Office can help you understand your options and maintain compliance with F-1 immigration regulations.

We encourage you to start these conversations early so that you have adequate time to explore your opportunities and complete any required applications or immigration processes.

F-1 Grace Period

Most F-1 students are eligible for a 60-day grace period after successfully completing their academic program. The grace period provides time to prepare for your next steps and make plans following graduation.

During the 60-day grace period, you may:

• Prepare to depart the United States
• Transfer your SEVIS record to another SEVP-certified institution
• Apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), if eligible and within the required application period

Plan Ahead for Success

Many post-graduation opportunities, including OPT and school transfers, require advance planning and timely action. Missing important deadlines may affect your eligibility for certain immigration benefits.

We strongly encourage you to meet with the International Student Office well before your expected graduation date to discuss your goals, review your options, and develop a plan for your transition after NECC.

Important: Do not wait until your final semester to begin planning. Early preparation can help ensure a smooth transition and allow you to take full advantage of the opportunities available to you after graduation.
