Department of Transitional Assistance

The Department of Transitional Assistance assists and empowers low-income individuals and families to meet their basic needs, improve their quality of life, and achieve long-term economic self-sufficiency. DTA serves one in seven residents of the Commonwealth with direct economic assistance (cash benefits) and food assistance (SNAP benefits), as well as workforce training opportunities.

Northeast Legal Aid

NLA offers free civil legal services to low income and elderly individuals and families in northeast Massachusetts. NLA has full-service offices in Lynn, Lowell and Lawrence, Massachusetts. NLA has an outreach office in Haverhill, Massachusetts with limited hours.

NLA’s legal services include everything from community legal education and counsel and advice, to full representation in complex litigation.

To qualify for NLA’s services, you must meet certain eligibility requirements unless you are elderly or you are a survivor of a crime. If you need civil legal services and cannot afford an attorney, contact us and let us determine if you qualify for our services.

New Hampshire Legal Services

New Hampshire Legal Assistance is a nonprofit law firm working to make justice a reality for and with people who experience economic hardship that threatens their basic human needs. Through representation and systemic advocacy, NHLA offers civil legal aid that addresses the effects and root causes of poverty.

We offer high-quality civil legal ranging from simple legal information and advice to vigorous and thorough representation in all of New Hampshire’s courts and before numerous local, state and federal agencies.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $67,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. Trained and certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Tax preparation is available late January through mid-April by appointment only.
